AR HUD Simulation

Virtual Reality

Project Details

3M makes film materials that go directly into windshields and create a more robust AR HUD display. This demonstration showcases what that potential HUD could look like in a variety of scenario's.

The Problem

Current HUD technology creates a very limited display for drivers. Our HUD solution allows for a much wider display and control over a variety of HUD depth elements. This means that the design options are greatly increased for auto manufacturers. How might we inspire our customers to create a more robust UX design for their HUDs? How can we show them the possibilities of utilizing our product?

Creating a mock-pit simulation for this demonstration would be very expensive, difficult to transport, and not that believable. But creating a driving simulation in VR that showcases the technology is very easy.

The Research

The research for this simulation included;

  • Learning what capabilities our film could enable.

  • Understanding current HUD limitations.

  • Identifying appropriate scenarios that are important to our customers.

  • Mocking up those scenarios and testing them with our lab to verify that everything was displaying correctly.

Key Considerations

I wanted to focus on really going overboard with the HUD elements to showcase how we could create a much greater user experience for drivers.

  • Put the user in the drivers seat to get the best HUD experience possible.

  • Correctly showcase the benefits of our products

  • Create real world scenarios that drivers currently experience and showcase how those scenarios would be very different with an enriched HUD.

  • Create the content is such a way that it can be viewed on numerous platforms. The same VR demo can be viewed in 360 on youtube, 2D clips can be shared on our social media, even screenshots and gifs can be used in our sales presentations.

Results

This demonstration was released in May 2022 at the SID Display Week in San Jose. The primary audience for it was the auto engineers who would utilize our films in their future auto designs. The challenge was to properly communicate to engineers the value that this technology brings to UX design for end users. That can sometimes be a hard task when the engineers are more concerned about how the technology functions and not what the technology can do for design. It did a great job communicating it's value and was well received by the target audience.
